Out of the thousands of interviews I’ve done with Sequin Members, perhaps my favorite comment was from a young woman who remarked, “The cards in my wallet are ugly.”
Despite designing many Visa cards, I’d never questioned the status quo — why was every card we launched black, blue, or grey? My research showed that card issuers choose these colors to inspire “trust.” But coincidentally, these are the exact colors that represent who the financial system is designed for (women could be rejected from bank accounts and credit cards until 1974 — not ancient history).
Simply, the financial system was designed to leave women out of the narrative.
